Nowadays the sector of communications and telecommunications is rapidly entering the list of the most promising and rapidly developing sectors of national economy. The decree of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov approved seven priority directions of development of the national science, including communications, especially in the field of development of modern communication technologies and industrial automation. Improvement of the telecommunication sphere is the most important aspect of the social policy pursued in Turkmenistan.

Revolutionary changes in the country's telecommunication infrastructure emerged from the first days of independence. The young state's purposeful policy on integration into the world community has become the basis for global modernization and development of telecommunications on the basis of the latest technology.

The Ministry of Industry and Communications, "Türkmenaragatnaşyk" Agency and its branches actively cooperated with many foreign countries, becoming members of international organizations such as the International Telecommunication Union, the World Postal Union and the Regional Commonwealth in the field of communications. Business partnership based on the desire of the Turkmen state to further dynamically develop the telecommunications system brings not only real results but also well-deserved recognition of communications colleagues from other countries of the world.

In 2002, the prestigious international organization Business Initative Directions (BID) awarded Turkmentelecom the prestigious "Golden" category for introduction of advanced technologies and high quality communication. Last year, "Turkmen Telecom" was awarded the Platinum Category at the annual contest held in Madrid among the world companies and enterprises in the sphere of manufacturing and providing services. The Turkmen communicators were given this high award for the international quality of services and steady technical and economic growth. Recently, the operation of the communications sector of the country has been marked with a new award. In Paris, the participants of the International Convention "The Era of Quality", which included representatives of the official and business circles, scientists from the world's leading universities, high quality experts in the field of quality, presented Turkmentelecom telecommunications company with the Diamond Star as the main prize based on a survey of independent experts.

The telecommunications system continues to be one of the rapidly developing and promising spheres of the national economy. The successful realization of a number of large investment projects, such as creation of the national infrastructure of cellular communication, construction of trunk and intra-zone optical and radio relay lines, development of this sphere in the countryside, as well as steady growth of the financial and economic indices of the sector are the results of timely and quality solution of tasks set for the national communications specialists by the National Program "Strategy of Economic, Political and Cultural Development of Turkmenistan till 2020". The State Program provides for further comprehensive development of the communications infrastructure.
