The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) is an international intergovernmental scientific research organization established by an Agreement signed by eleven founding countries on March 26, 1956, and registered with the United Nations on February 1, 1957.

The Institute was founded to unite the efforts, scientific and material potentials of member states to study the fundamental properties of matter. JINR members today are 18 states: the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Bulgaria, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Georgia, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the Republic of Cuba, the Republic of Moldova, Mongolia, the Republic of Poland, Romania, the Russian Federation, the Slovak Republic, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. At the governmental level, the Institute has cooperation agreements with Egypt, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Serbia and the Republic of South Africa.

JINR activities in Russia are carried out in accordance with the Federal Law of the Russian Federation "On Ratification of the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research on the Location and Conditions of Activities of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in the Russian Federation". In accordance with the Charter the Institute carries out its activities on the principles of openness for participation of all interested states, their equal mutually beneficial cooperation.
