IP Addresses: Dynamics vs. Statics

In addition to the external IP address, there is also such a thing as a local IP, that is, an address within the network of a particular provider. The fact is there is a shortage of external IP addresses in the world, so providers often give the same IP address to several clients. However, inside the network of the provider itself, each computer receives a special local IP not used to access the global web.

The external IP address can be static, that is, constant, or dynamic - changing every time you reconnect to the Network, reboot the router, and so on. Many users, noticing that their IP address has changed, begin to wonder: whether it is all right, or whether their computer has been hacked, and so on. Now we will try to figure out what the advantages and disadvantages of dynamic and static IP are and how to get the type of address you need

Why does IP change?

Some providers quite officially provide dynamic IP addresses. The fact is that the number of unique IP addresses available to the provider may be less than the number of its clients. But since often not all users connect to the Internet at the same time, sometimes providers act as follows: when connecting, the user is given one of the free IP addresses for that minute, and after the access session is completed, this IP is returned to the list available to subscribers. However, nowadays it is no longer so relevant, because. most people use routers and they are on 24 hours a day.

Dynamic vs. Static IP Addresses: Advantages and Disadvantages

Dynamic IP address

It is generally accepted that dynamic IP addresses are much safer for novice users. For example, if someone starts hacking into your network node to gain access to your computer, after such an elementary procedure as rebooting the router, the attacker will be forced to find out your IP address anew and actually hack from scratch.

Sometimes a constant change of the IP address is helpful for work. For example, if you are engaged in SMM, hidden PR or other activities related to communicating on sites under different names, then it may look suspicious and implausible with the same IP address. Dynamic IP change will come in handy.

In some cases, forums and conferences may use the so-called "ban", that is, a ban on access for a certain participant. Sometimes a more stringent restriction is applied - blocking a specific IP. If you fall under such sanctions, then the dynamic change of the IP address will allow you to freely read the information on your favorite resource and even register there under a new name in order to continue communication. Cases of all IPs of a certain provider being blocked are extremely rare.

Also, a dynamic IP is convenient in cases where you work with free file hosting services. Often, restrictions are imposed on them - for example, you can download no more than 1 file in 3 to 6 hours from one IP. After downloading the first document, you just need to restart the router, and you can immediately start downloading another one.

Static IP address

A static IP address lacks these benefits, but it has others. For example, when authorizing on Internet banking sites and other resources requiring maximum information protection, it is possible to bind a login (account) to a specific IP. And even if third parties find out your password, they are unlikely to be able to access secret data, since this will only be possible from your IP. But you should keep in mind that when you change the provider, you will lose this IP address. Also, you will not be able to access your account on the site from another location.

Sometimes it may be necessary to access your home or any other computer remotely. There is special software used for the purpose: for example, TeamViewer or Remote Administrator. With the help of such software, knowing the IP address and a special password, it will be possible to work with the computer remotely, see the desktop and all the contents. The main thing is that the program be installed on both computers, including the one you want to access. But this is only possible if the computer is assigned a known static IP. In the case of a dynamic IP address, even an elementary disconnection will make it impossible to get remote access.

Also, a static IP is necessary if you want to keep a game server on your own computer or host your site. In this case, of course, the IP must be constant, otherwise users will keep losing access to your resource.

How to change dynamic IP to static and vice versa

If your provider provides a static IP address, and for some reason you want to change or hide it, this is not a problem. You can use a special browser utility or an anonymizer (https://2ip.io/anonim/), allowing you to get a different IP address at any moment. So, for example, you go to the site where your IP has been blocked. As an option, in the properties of the network connection, open the settings for the TCP/IP protocol version 4/6 (depending on which one you use) and check the box at "Obtain an IP address automatically". In this case, with each new connection to the Network, your node will receive a new address.

If, on the contrary, you need a static IP address, and the provider provides a dynamic one, this problem can also be solved. You need to go to the settings of your network connection, check the box at "Use the following IP address" and manually enter a specific IP. Of course, it must refer to the pool of addresses available specifically to your provider. If the address is already taken by someone, you will need to change the IP until you find a free one.

In some cases, it is easier to use the DynDNS service (https://www.noip.com). It allows you to get a subdomain and bind it to a specific network device, including your computer having no permanent address. This will make it possible to get to your FTP server, website or other resource from the outside at any moment, since even with a dynamic change in the real IP address, due to the service, a permanent access address will be saved.
